I couldn't help notice that both of them have the big EE at the start of the serial number. Are there any authentic guitars with the EE serial prefix? It seems like most of the fakes I see have it.

Why would someone bother to fake an inexpensive guitar?

for the same reason 20 and 50€ bills got more faked than 200 or 500€ bills

Many don't expect it...

it's easier to sell 10 faked Epis for 300€ each to clueless parents or kids than selling one faked Gibson for 3000€

they still make $$$ with them

edit:

yep, it is legit - though it is not a LP and not a Gibson
it seems to be an Epi SG-310 with a bolt-on neck

What are the clues here? The binding? The off-kilter tuners? The larger EE in the serial number?

tuner-washers, bodyshape/knob alignment,
round studs, binding,
and they did not have that high (19724) productionnumbers in 2008

Hi folks,

Mooching on ebay and spotted this one:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272668986317

Looks like the seller got stung by the previous owner who sold it to him, as there's electrical issues, but I'm not sure it's the genuine article anyway?

Benefit of the doubt, I'd say he's doesn't realise it may be a knock off - now the ethical bit...

Assuming it IS a fake, would you contact him? Or just notify ebay...?

Prepared to stand corrected if it is legit - what do you reckon?

Bob

The "F" in the serial number looks "F"'d up, but, like you, I'm still learning how to spot fakes. ;)

185 GBP? Assuming it's genuine, the price seems high for a used Standard that has broken pots.

The headstock shape and epiphone logo look wrong to me too, hence asking here - yep, still have my 'L' plates on when it comes to spotting fakes...

Think the £185 is what he paid for it...?

Worryingly, I'd not have thought that might have been dodgy before joining the forum!

Even if I'm wrong, it's good to know there's people to ask :thumb:

It reads as though he wasn't told about the pots and the pickup issue - another reason to plug in any guitar you're thinking of buying and try it out. If the seller says no, I'd walk away...

And yes, we don't know if he's trying it on himself, or being honest, (feedback is good though, so...) but as I said - benefit of the doubt, in his shoes I'd be gutted if I bought a duff guitar :frown:
