Cheating is using multitrack recording. pedals of all kinds.
Editing solos , adding reverb to recordings, equalizing .
If it's not live it's cheating .
I am a strong advocate of cheating . I cheat all the time, fake amps, the works.
It's smoke and mirrors and it's so much fun.

I don't think that's even cheating. It's how most studio tracks are cut.

I don't think there's "cheating" in art - just different techniques and methods. If you look at it from the exact opposite angle, artists also find different methods/tools to help recreate recordings live as well - pre-recorded harmonies, sample pads etc..

When I cover anyone's music, I do it note for note, exactly.

If I had the skill set so would I. Being a post-op carpal tunnel survivor , I only play slide guitar as my finger no long have the dexterity to play guitar with my fingers. Rock on Garth!

Back in the day, I used to at least record 2 to four guitar solos and tell the folks , " Go ahead and pick the solo you liked the most and leave " .
Next thing I know, they sliced together the parts they like from each of the solos, that I laid down . Then I had to relearn the solo

gee , thanks that's very kind of you to say. I mean what was I gonna do sit back in my Barcalounger drink weak spearmint tea and read Reader's Digest as senility creeps up on me.
Oh I'm not strong not at all, I am chronically pissed off and very tenacious due to a very large helping of childhood abuse.
