Hey good folks at EpiTalk,
I'm a huge fan of Epiphone archtops. I've always been impressed by their playability, sound and style since I started playing guitar in 2000 at age 15.
I got my first Epiphone (a Sheraton II) in 2012 after reaching the semifinals of the Guitar Center King of the Blues competition. I had a choice between two Epi Les Paul's and a Sheraton, and I jumped at the chance to get a Sherry. After receiving it and realizing how quality it was, I've been adding Epi archtops to my collection as quickly as I can!
A little more backstory -- one of my bucket list guitars that I've wanted since I began playing is a satin cherry red Gibson ES-335. Well, recently a friend of mine picked up a Gibson ES-339 and brought it by for a jam session. I strapped it on, played it for awhile and let's just say I was less than impressed. Don't get me wrong, it was a great playing guitar....but my Sheraton not only played just as nicely, but sounded even better to my ears!
That's when I decided that, at least for me, it isn't worth paying a huge amount of coin for a guitar if the playability of it isn't leaps and bounds ahead of a similar Epiphone model. Granted, the Epiphone Casino has P90's while an ES-335 has humbuckers, but tonally my Sheraton already covers that ground...so I bit the bullet and decided to go with a cherry red Casino!
Upon arrival, it needed a setup -- neck had too much relief, and the bridge was way too high. Literally five minutes later, I had the action crazy low with no fret buzz whatsoever -- I think the factory fretwork on the recent MIC Epiphone archtops is what has impressed me most. I haven't had any issues at all with getting nice, low action with no buzz on any of the three I own.
So anyway, I'm super impressed and this one is most certainly a keeper. On with the pr0n!
