Played my Special for an hour. Decided to deal with the 5th fret, 9th fret, and 16th fret. 5th was very proud on the high E and the B. Tapped, tapped more, tapped harder. Decided it isn't going any deeper, so lightly filed it until it was even with it's neighbors. Tapped the 9th and 16th and those went down fine. Then I went over each fret with 180, 400, 1500, and 2000 grit erasers. Light rub of oil to clean more than polish. Then new set of 10s, tuned, stretched, tuned again. Then played another hour marveling at the slick and shiny frets.

I think the one and only thing I dislike on the Special is how I have to mes with the strings to sit right on the tail. Do any of you guys notch yours? I don't have enough hands to hold the string centered while restringing. What's the trick?

Yes sir. The strings have made small marks that they can settle into, but new strings don't always want to settle into them and go to one side or another.

Hmm ... never found that to be a problem. Once the string is under tension, it never moves sideways.

I'm curious if it has to do with string design. Some I've used have too much wind at the ring end and don't comply well with the wrap. These are SIT strings and don't exactly have that issue, but seems like the tension is there even without the excess wind.

One thing you might have missed is to slip each string in an extra ball end before threading it in the bar. That way, it keeps the wind toward the inside of the bridge.

Lowered action, adjusted truss rod, changed to a fresh set of 9s, corrected intonation, and gave it a good cleaning. Grabbed an assortment of picks, mostly soft ones, a spare tuner, and a microfiber cloth, and stuck it all in the Gator case. Presented it to my nephew who is leaving today to go back home to Tromso Norway. He is stoked.

I'll miss it but not as much as he'll enjoy it.

Little update: my nephew's mom sent me a picture. He got home, waited 24 agonizing hours to open the case, and the guitar is fine. She found a nice used Hercules stand locally that they will pick up. Now they are studying amps.

This is like the start of a love story.

Well... today I put Lucy The Love Machine in my lap and pondered that little inspection sticker on the back of the headstock that's been on it for 19 years. Should I remove it or not? The wife says to leave it alone. Now the happy wife, happy life concept pops into the picture. Oh well... I'll get used to it.
So do you also keep the factory window stickers intact after buying a new car? Just asking!

I finally nailed the intonation of my junior.

I put a Schaller Signum bridge on months back, with 11s. The original lightning bar was more than fine but the Schaller is an upgrade, from anchor to saddle.

I don’t remember how much time I spent on intonation, but I restrung with 10s a few weeks ago and… it wasn’t pretty.

Anyway, I’ve worked on one string a night (all my attention span and practice plans would bear) and I’m finally done!

Unplugged it sounds angelic. Too late to power up tonight, but I’m looking forward to the weekend.

Hope you all enjoy yours, too.

Never owned a new car so I have no idea. 🤣 I am going to take the sticker off simply because it annoys me. Have no idea what this guitar will be worth in 20 more years but I seriously doubt I'll put a grandkid through college if I sell it but it's priceless to me. Since I'm a no stickers fellow, problem solved 👍🏻

Forgive me if I’m asking a stupid question, but has anyone swapped out the pickups on a guitar for something rather different? Like P90s on a ES335 or Humbuckers on a Casino? If so, what was it like?

Can't be done without compromises. Either route for the new pickup size or be content with imitations.
