What a smokin' deal for $199! I'm also glad they're all sold out and I don't have to buy another guitar right now. Thanks for the heads-up though. Dang! I liked everything about it except the gold hardware and HUGE headstock. The horns do look extra small to me though. Congrats to all who scored these! I'm sort of jealous.

While we're freaking with anticipation waiting for our new guits to come, I thought I'd post the Genesis Wiki history from 1979 to 1981. It's a somewhat interesting story for the freaks and geeks amongst us, so enjoy!

History[edit]
Three Genesis Series models (GN-CST, GN-DLX, GN-STD) first appeared in the 1979 Epiphone catalog and were produced in Taiwan until 1981. The 1980 price list indicates two additional Genesis Series models were offered briefly; The GN student model, and the GN-BA bass. All models of the Genesis (except the bass) shipped with black open-coil humbucker pickups with three height-adjustment screws, and not plated pickup covers with two height-adjustment screws as shown in the Epiphone specification sheets. It is not known whether the student model guitar "The GN" went into production; no known examples have been identified. It is rumored that Genesis guitars were made in Japan, but this is unsubstantiated. Gibson states that Genesis guitars were made in Taiwan.

The Genesis series was designed by Jim Walker, then Director of Marketing for Gibson. They were prototyped in Japan, but due to cost considerations were manufactured at a factory owned by Pearl Drums in Taichung, Taiwan.[1][2]

In 2012, Gibson considered reissuing the model as the Limited Edition Genesis PRO and several prototypes were made and shown at trade shows.

Construction[edit]
All models featured a solid mahogany body, solid mahogany set neck, rosewood fretboard, two humbucker pickups, two volume controls, one master tone control, and a DPDT switch used for coil tapping.
The Genesis also featured an elongated headstock with 3 + 3 tuners, 22 frets, a front-mounted output jack, a Tune-o-matic bridge, and stop tailpiece.[3] The new PRO model includes two tone and volume controls. The two humbucker pickups are also covered.

Models[edit]
The Genesis was available in three models: the Standard had an unbound fretboard with dot inlays, single-ply binding on the body front and chrome hardware; theDeluxe had single-ply binding on the neck and headstock, double-ply binding on the body front and rear, chrome hardware and crown (trapezoid) inlays; the Customhad double binding on the neck, triple binding on the headstock, quadruple binding on the body, rectangular block fretboard inlays and gold plated hardware. The PRO reissue edition will feature some of the features that appear in all three original models, along with some new features.

Finishes[edit]
The Deluxe and Custom models were available in ebony (EB) and dark sunburst (DS) only.
The Standard model was available in ebony and wine red (WR).
In the July 1, 1980 catalog, the Standard model became available in dark sunburst, and an entry-level The Genesis model and 4-string Genesis Bass guitar were offered.

Mine is on the truck to be delivered today. Pics to follow. I'm going to have to let it thaw out for 2 days before I plug it in. Thanks for the read.

Mine came last night, and I gave it overnight to acclimate to the house before I opened the box (according to ups, it had been on the truck since 4:30 am - 14.5 hrs ! and yesterdays high here was 20*). I don't have pics yet, but I am a little disappointed. There is a pretty significant finish crack / chipped out finish on the (treble) side of the neck from the nut to the first fret. I've examined it pretty closely and there doesn't seem to be any actual crack in the neck itself, but the damage is noticeable and also can be felt while fretting the neck in cowboy chords. (There was NO external damage to the packaging, in fact it was actually well packed for shipping in a padded double box, with original, unopened Epiphone distribution box [with cardboard form fitting packaging, micro-cell foam bag, and bubble wrap] inside).

I'm NOT going to send it back, because a $200 closeout guitar is just that. They won't be able to give me a replacement, and I bought it because it was cheap enough to not really care about it. So I will have to try and give it the "drop-fill" treatment and hope that I can buff-out the nagging feeling. The other (minor) let down is the color. Supposed to be Trans Midnight Ebony, but it has a more greenish-gray tint to it that is even over the binding. Again, no reason to send back a $200 guitar, but not quite what I expected from Epiphone.

Otherwise, the guitar is very nice. The hardware is what I expect from Epiphone and consistent with my other Epi's. ProBuckers seem decent, but I'm going to have to let the coil-tap sound grow on me, as it is a little meh compared to actual single coils. The giant headstock is still just as giant as I remember it being ( ). It may become the guitar I take with me when I travel in our RV, since I would not worry about it as much as some of my nicer guitars. I won't think twice about modding it later, if that becomes something interesting. I'll get some pictures and post a NGD thread.

I just wondered if anybody else that jumped on this deal got a less-than-first-quality instrument ? comments ?

Mine got here tonight, but I pulled a surprise. My daughter turned 16 on the 7th and got a Genesis for a late birthday present. :naughty: :applause:

Sorry for the usual crappy phone pics. :dunno:

Overall fit and finish are perfect, no defects or blems anywhere. It seems a bit lighter than my old one. And there's a couple buzzy frets, but a minor fix, they're not bad. Next comes plugging it in, but it's too late tonight. And it's from QingDao!

Congrats! on the NGD. I think with your daughter, you can count that as a double NGD!

I have an older Midnight Genesis, so I figured that kiddo should get this one since she liked mine so much. The underlying objective is that she wants her and I to do a song together at the school talent show (thankfully she can sing, but not I). ;)

I've been trying to decide whether to do both Genesis together or if I should use my Pro/FX and have 2 Vintagebursts onstage?

Her Genesis is actually the same orange in the center as my Pro/FX. Can't explain the lighting difference to cause those extremes.

When she was 4 she used to hang out at a bar with us and listen to me play this song with my friend's band and always loved it. Now that she's grown she wants to do it with me (talk about being one proud friggin' dad!). :dude:

That's awesome, Mark. You should be proud. I'd go Pro/Fx, only because if I was in the audience, and you both had the same axe, it would be distracting. But then, only I see stupid stuff like that.

Simple, on the Genesis you used a flash, not on the Pro FX. Easy to spot, just look at the carpet color. And PLEAZZZZE, take off those awful stikers under the pots

I always kinda freak out when I buy a "used" guitar with the stickers still on it. It's literally like 10 seconds and they're coming off for me.
I am extremely lazy when it comes to removing stickers. It is not until someone points it out, do I actually remove them.

Kinda reminds me of the guy who buys a new car, & drives around for 6 months or more with the dealer sheet still in the window!

OK, so I finally got around to the deeper evaluation of my new Genesis. As I stated earlier, I was disappointed in the fit and finish of this particular unit. As it was in a sealed original Epiphone shipping box, I'm going to guess that MF didn't inspect it, or have anything to do with the damage. I mentioned the finish crack in the neck (not really a crack in the neck, just messed up finish with a chip all the way to the wood). Here it is :

NeckCrack_zpsplhggdwq.jpg

I'm going to have a try at fixing that, will let you know how it comes out.

On closer inspection, I discovered that there are several cracks in the neck binding, at the frets. Through the binding but NOT through the finish. They are located at the 4th, 8th and 10th frets on the treble side (not visible to the player) and at the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th 8th, and 14th frets on the bass side (visible to me but you do have to look for them). Looks like this :

BindingCrack_zpssvjejjwd.jpg

This I'm going to have to live with.

I needed to do a complete setup on it as it was not in playable shape. The Bridge was jacked up so high that when I measured action at the 22nd fret using my Stew-Mac gauge, it only goes to 140/1000s, and the strings were higher than that. I brought it down to about .065 at the 22nd, and checked relief at the 8th - it was actually pretty good at about .010. So the neck is straight and the correct relief, and I now have it set to a pretty decent playable action (not super low, but comfortable). Really had to work on the bridge saddles to get it into intonation, but after I did that I put on a fresh set of strings and gave it a play.

Here are some additional pics : (sorry for the crappy flash pictures, stuck inside today with miserable cold weather)

body_zpsmpefi9qt.jpg

Body, Midnight Ebony, but it seems to have a greenish-grey cast (including the binding)

PairEpis_zpsxaernh2v.jpg

stand shot, and next to it's big brother, my '59 Reissue in 'Iced Tea'

Overall, I still feel like I got a bargain, but I would have been upset if I had paid full price.

Ouch ! ... If it was me, I'd return it and wait for a better one to come along eventually. That neck has had a severe blow to it.

Unfortunately, this was a $199 closeout special. Never going to get that price again, and all Musicians Fiend has remaining are re-stocks at $424. I just don't have the choice to send it back, and at $199 I figure I can swallow a little disappointment and also get to practice my guitar repair skills.
