I spent some time after work diddling my stripper. I went to restring it, and had planned to try top wrapping, but found that the strings I have won't work well that way. The twisted section above the balls is too tall and will kink weird if I top wrap. Particularly the fat E, A, and D. So I went the boring route.

Also, I wasn't happy with how my bridge pickup sat in the aftermarket pickup rings. The neck one was a bit shifted too, but the bridge one is shifted toward the side quite a bit, so that the high E string isn't over the poles.

I figured it was cheap rings, so I tried dropping the pickups into some real Epiphone ones, unfortunately I only have cream ones. Even more unfortunately it didn't solve the problem. I may just need to bend the legs of the pickups a bit. Next time it needs strings I'll try that and swap back to black rings.

Unless it grows on me.

Today I lnstalled new Epi probuckers and all new electronics into an older Epi LP Standard.Over the weekend I refinished the top that my friend did a horrible job stripping, now it’s a nice rosewood finish with some clear coat and about 4 coats of floor polish and buffed to a nice sheen.Pics when it’s finished.

@Eddd I love that ^

I played my stripper for two hours last night and enjoyed it. I'm going to play it again tonight on a tube amp to enjoy it some more. I was being lazy and left the pickups lower than I normally would, it turned out to sound brilliant! But first... I have "chores".

They are beautiful guitars. Well made and lush sounding. I love the aged gloss finish. And the neck is stout and easy to play.

Best guitar I could find in that price range. Actually anbout the only one I found in that range.

Acoustic 12 strings seem to have a cheaper range and then it just shoots up into that above $2000 range leaving almost nothing in the $1000 range.

Epiphone plugged that hole and did it very nicely indeed.

For the last several months I've been very busy modifying or upgrading, dependent upon your perspective, the three Les Paul's I bought late last year. Today I received a package from the UK with the last harness assembly I plan on installing in one of my relatively new LP's. It's from Monty's, Matt Gleason's company that specializes in some of the finest PAF's the world over. I'll probably install the harness later this evening leaving only the decision about pickups for the last wave of modifying.

First, my LP, my TV Yellow Special, bought last fall as a demo for $359, now sports a Faber wrap around tailpiece, a Tone Man 50's style wiring harness complete with Bourn pots and PIO caps along with a pair of Wolfetone P90 Mean (neck) and Meaner (bridge) pickups. I don't really feel the need to do much else to the guitar as it currently acquits itself quite nicely. I'm rather satisfied with the end results especially considering the total outlay.

Second, the '59 ADB has undergone a similar series of improvements. Like the Special, it has been equipped with Faber gear. More precisely, an ABR-M bridge with titanium and nickel plated brass saddles. Installation included are the studs and bushings. The '59 style tail piece was also installed with studs and bushings. Along with the hardware, a Tone Man '59 style harness with Bourn caps and PIO caps brought new focus to the package.

Third and most recent, the '59 ASF went through all the same Faber hardware upgrades as its ABD brother and is now waiting for its new Monty's harness, pictured below.

That will only leave experiments with new pickups for the two '59's. I've been dying to try the Monty's Under Spun PAF's so they might be next on the agenda. But after changing the last harness, I may sit with these guitars for awhile to really get a handle on what, if anything, needs to be changed. The '59's are already so much more interesting with the mods that have already been preformed. We'll see

I just wanted to bring everyone up to speed with what's been going on in my little Epi world!

I used my '68 Casino & my Korean Dot on a original tune I'm working on.
I played arpeggios on the Casino and on the dot I did volume swells.
I record using Line Pods & their fx pedals ( old school here ). I record on a Tascam 2488 Neo.
I also got back from my son , my '90 Epi Everly Brothers model. I bought it new then and installed a Martin thinline pup for live gigs. I have it set up now for Nashville tuning , but I'm going to set it for regular , once I get some extra time.
So much to do , so little time. Lol.

I had Tyson Tone Precious & Grace PAFs in this Ultra,
2021-10-25.jpg

... and Probuckers 1&2 in this PRS
setup.jpg

Satisfied with both as they were, but I was curious to see what, if pickups migrated from one to the other.

Very different pickups. From Tyson Tone Lab:
Iconic ’59 Les Paul Burst Tone – dry, woody and dynamic. Precious
(bridge pickup) offers muscular hollow midrange. Grace (neck pickup)
has a clear warm tone that’s the perfect compliment to Precious.

7.5K neck and 8.1K bridge approximate resistance.
Vintage spec rough sand-cast ALNICO magnets

That is a good description.

Not sure yet is that was a good move ... will see,

Yep, looks legit to me
it is one more proof of the inconsistent build-quality back then
That's cool. I told my coworker if she ever decides to sell, think of me. Once I was done it played like a dream. The only thing I didn't like was the pots and pickups. One pickup would be good for heavy metal, the other sounded like a jazzy goose to me.

Played my special a bit. I replaced th÷ nut with a bone one a while back and wasn't happy with the height. I noticed the neck was a bit too relieved as well tonight. Looked at the clock, 10:45pm, yes why not? Let's do this.

Removed strap and truss rod cover. Turned the rod 2 quarters. Loosened strings enough to move the aside and popped the nut out. I sanded the back a bit and pressed it back in place, eyeballed a straight edge from the frets to the nut, repeated until I was happy with the height.

While tuning I noticed the nut wasn't sitting flat. I loosened the strings to check behind the nut, no obstruction. Hmm, pressed it in hard and it stayed flat. Tuned to pitch and marveled at how much difference that made. The action is bit lower than I like, but it is good. I found a few proud frets as well. I'll do the tap dance on those later this week.

Look at that action 👀

I've done the unthinkable

Removed that blinding white guard. I was considering sending it to some company to have a black one and a red tortoise one made and see which I prefer, but hmm... maybe staying nude.
